I don't know if you remember the thread a couple of days ago about getting the serial number of a network volume drive, but there's a technique in the MS KB for this that relies on the volume number being stored in the file's information structure. Unfortunately, it doesn't work on Novell networks. The reason, of course, must be that the OS (Novell) doesn't put it there.
Another case would be a device driver not written to the specs as outlined in the DDK. Microsoft can't do anything about these sort of issues.
