I don't think that a 10mb link is THAT slow (seconds to 20 mins) if all you are doing is opening tables - not querying or Scanning etc

Maybe you should be looking into network issues (how about some of the threads on UT about netbeui with IP?)

How many collisions are you getting / Packets lost etc., how many users are sharing the same 10mb pipe?

Try just copying a 10meg file - see how long it takes
(unfortunatley 10mb/s is MegaBits per second so it's a little harder on the maths)
