What doesn't rest well with me though, is that they're running on old technology. I'm trying to formulate an arguement to convince them once for all but I'm stalling for ideas that sound convincing. They want to know what benefits they're likely to see and more importantly what risks they are exposing themselves to. It may help to say that this is an in house development team who are supplying systems to their billing & contracts department.

To add to what the other folks have said... <g>

The customer is always right, even when they are patently wrong.

So, if these folks want to stay with old technology and you wish to retain them as a client here's what I'd do.. I would sit down and write them a very nice letter outlining the various pros & cons that the others here have given you. Then I would inform them that as the technology got older you were going to need to charge a correspondingly higher amount for your time. Most people might think this is backwards and it is with respect to hardware. Software is an entirely different matter. To find a good COBOL programmer these days I'd bet you would pay a little extra as they are scarcer. Same for your program. You will now need to use your valuable resources to keep multiple development platforms available. That costs and there are fewer companies for you to amotize that extra expense against.

Does that make sense?
Best,
