>Yesterday, I was in a meeting where I heard an important executive saying that Client-Server tech has become obsolete due to complexity and High costs.
>Is this true?
>What´s the next level in app development?

At one level, these comments are true (sort of). Client server apps are inherently more complex and more expensive to implement. However, that is only one side of the issue. The question arises as to what benefits are accrued as a result of implementing the technology? Whether C/S is the way to go depends on the answer to that question.

Where the "executive" is off base is with respect to the obselete comment. Why? Because complexity and high costs are nothing more than naked statements of fact. By themselves, they don't mean a lot. It is like saying a car is obselete because it uses 4 wheels. Again, 4 wheels is a statement of fact. It is neither good or bad on its face - it merely is.

It is a ludicrous statement, not because he/she says that C/S technology is obselete, but because of the illogical and somewhat irrelevant premise that is used to base the conclusion upon. While Costs and complexity can imply something is obselete, that can only be true when a more efficient way is available.

Intrestingly enough, C/S technology, it its pureist form, exists in the abstract and transcends a lot of things. If you think about it, all web-based technology is nothing more than an implementation of C/S technology.

One could make the argument that in light of other things, stateful-based C/S applications are becoming obselete. In some situations, this may be true. However, one cannot make a per-se statement - one that is applicable in all situations regardless of context.

I am never surprised by the inverse relationship that often exists between the rank one has in an organization and the intelligence and thoughtfulness of comments that are made.
