Yeah, the first or second store is in my neighborhood. It's a fun place to shop, though not cheap. Now that my kids are older teens, I do in there as much, though.

The guy who started Zany Brainy previously owned a chain of bookstores called Encore Books. That started out as a student project when he was at Penn. They originally sold remaindered books (thus "Encore") and other discounted books. As they grew, they added current books, but discounted. He sold the chain (to some drugstore company, maybe RiteAid). With the growth of Barnes and Noble and Borders, I think all the Encore stores have closed now, but for a long time, it was my favorite bookstore.

IAC, as I heard the story, when the guy had his first kid, he started Zany Brainy.
