Are *'s valid Code 39 characters? Maybe you could try just acbd, not *abcd*.

Also, some barcode fonts require a PRG that converts your human-readable bar code string into a string that the bar code font can interpret. Kind of like a pre-processor.

Another issue could be that the printer cannot print bitmaps. If the printer does not have an internal Code 39 font, then the font that you are using is just a bitmap sent to the printer. Can you print the bar code from another app like Microsoft Word?
