My comment was, of course, in the context of Web development, where you definitely have to deal with "stateless" concepts. Web development forces you into physical n-Tier, since part of the app must live and run on an Internet server.

Technically, you can have a logical n-Tier design that is not stateless, but your options for physically deploying those tiers are severely limited if not designed to be stateless.
