I had this same situation and posted the same question. Unfortunatley this is what I learned. The dat file for COBOL is defined in the code. So the programmer could format the dat file any darn way he wanted. At least that is what I was told. I gave up on it after that figuring it would take more time to go further that route than to just have the data entered again in a dbf (which the client didn't mind so that ended that question)
