Apparently the behaviour is standard windows design, and I can see why.
Since this involves placement of the cursor by the mouse, a double-click will do the job *and be consistent with windows* in general. In other words, a single click places the cursor at the position and a d-click (sometimes a t-click) selects the whole field.
