Another solution that I use is to create a remote view on the Excel spreadsheet or using SPT to import the data into a local cursor. Then if the Excel spreadsheet change, I will be able to see it.

I used the append from and Import commands and they work very well. The reason I prefer Remote views or SPT is beacuse the spreeadsheet I import data from is updated more than once a day.
