Alex, if the server is a domain controller, you can not change the name without using dcpromo first to demote it to a member server (at least that's what everything I've read says). Unfortunately if you do that, and it is the sole W2K server w/Active Directory (ie. also the Global Catalog server), you'll lose your AD setup. Definitely look into the details of backup and recovery of AD if you are using it as well as moving the Global Catalog if you really need to change the name...
