While I understand the principle you're suggesting, Craig, there are
legitimate user interface justifications for changing the background color of
objects, to differentiate the use or meaning of a control. I have seen this
used to designate required fields or "picklist-able" controls and I think it
is quite user-friendly.

user, somewhere will have their system colors set in a way they won't be able
to see your "enabled" color.
