My colleague wrote an application using standard MS ActiveX Calendar Control. User can important dates in the database, when the date is selected in the Calendar the user-defined message just showed on the form in a label. Looks good enough and simple to implement.

In addition you can check CoolControls library by Alexander Grigoriev available here in Download section. He used API functions instead of ActiveX controls.
