When I was a kid my folks visited my uncle in Idaho. He had an apple juice/cider business. He showed me the vats where the applejuice was collected from the presses. There was a long pole with a net attached. I asked him what it was for and he said to scoop up rats who drown and float to the surface. I suppose he also used it to scoop swiming rats. I've never drunk a drop of apple juice since then.
