If you do a search, there have been some recent threads concerning slow file opening with multiple W98 clients working against a W2K server. The first one gets in fine (fast performance), subsequent ones are slow.

One thing that has helped is to disable antivirus software. If disabling it makes no difference, try UNINSTALLING it.
