Ok, I'll explain since I forgot the word 'label'.
Characters in 'regular' mode on the old printers were
typically 10 point. That is, you could get 10 per inch. That meant for a 3 1/2" label you could typically get 35 characters. Vertically you could either get 8 or 8 lines depending on how the font was constructed.
