First use of punched paper to control weaving mills - 1725
Morse Code - 1837
Telephone - 1876
Dr. Hollerith - 1890 (U.S. Census, using punched cards)
Radio Teletype - 1903

Each of the above used some form of hole punched in paper or cardstock to convey intelligence.
