When you install, there is an option (or prompt?) taht asks you of you want to put the shortcut on desktop. In addition, there should be a Start menu for it, as far as I know. Finally, if you have some products, like VFP or VB, F1 key will run MSDN help window.
Yes, if you did not instaled some chapters, CD will be prompted to insert (if not already inserted). All that you need is to install full search index. Other things will be read from CD.
We also put MSDN in the shared folder on the server (full copy of all CD's) and install MSDN from that place. This way all developers in the network access one copy of MSDN from the shared server.
