I was thinking that the compiler was looking at any statment that began with an "*" and calling that a comment, and then any statment that didn't have it was the beginning of a statment. In hindsight I suppose it is more important to allow for multi-line statements with the ';' than it is to solve this particular issue with a leading asterisk.
