Well, It just always worked for me, so I'm not sure what I did to make it work. The only change I made from the basic configuration is to check the "Always output files to:" box.

Are you sure the report isn't being stuck in some obscure place? If you check your registry, you'll see the 5D has a default output location setting that's set for some location under its install, unless you override it as I have.
