Probably, it is because UNICODE characters are used. In addition, how characters are displayed also depended on the locale (regional) settings. For example, Ukrainian language is installed on my machine, Ukrainian is a main language, thus Ukrainian characters used in the higher part of the ASCII table (codes 129..255). So, Alt+160 displays Ukrainian 'a' for me.
