Try kylix from Borland, for example. Or jBuilder.

John,

Kylix? How much demand is there for Kylix at this time? Is it increasing? Will it surpass VB/ASP or .NET? Will it surpass even VFP's little piece of the market? Before I invest my time in any new programming languages, I want to be assured that there will be continued and growing demand for that skillset. I'm not familiar with the demand for Kylix right now but could probably do a search and find out.

Yes, jBuilder would be valuable in that it's a Java IDE but the same goes for any Java IDE. Why don't you just say "learn Java with whatever your IDE preference is"?

To be honest, I haven't decided whether or not going outside MS would be in the best interest of my time and effort. I'm going to wait a while and see how things shake out. I still think .NET will be my best bet in terms of learning curve vs. profitability/demand.

Right now I am thankful to at least have a fairly well-rounded MS development skillset (VFP, VB, ASP, VID, SQL etc.). Learning a whole new platform/paradigm like Java + Oracle would be a major investment in my time and I will need to assess whether this is in my best interests when the time comes.

Thanks for your input, John, it is worthy of consideration.
