you are talking about two different things here.
subdomains and sub sites. (proper internet terms not used here ) sorry.)

However a sub domain like you want for instance

mynewsite.1amsoftware.com would be some computer, a seperate computer running a seperate web server with a different ip address,

Where www.1amsoftware.com/mynewsite is just a sub directory, or folder off my main site.

You cant make a new site like 123.456.789/subsite, and have a dns point to that address. Sorry.

dns's have to point to an ip address, One server can have more than one ip address, if you run more than one port other than port 80 .. but that gets a little tricky.
or you could have your web server setup with various ip address, and route them to sub folders based on the domain name..

But setting up a virtual Directory for various different web site dns's and setting up machine names like mynewmachine.1amsoftware.com myoldmachine.1amsoftware.com are totally different. both reqire dns hosting by either yourself (if you know how) or your isp. both require seperate ip address

Clear as mudd huh.

>>>What do I need to do to a virtual directory to make the web address "subdomain.domain.com" get directed to it? I thought it would automatically do this, but it's just defaulting to my default web site instead.

>>I believe you have to enter those sub domains in your DNS server or at the ISP level if you don't have a DNS server.

>But - how do you tell it which virtual to go to? Do you just direct the DNS entry for "subdomain.domain.com" to the address "123.456.789/subdomain"?
In the beginning, there was a command prompt, and all was well.
