Craig and Kevin have given you the most probable cause (switch to Large Fonts). Note, though, that this can even happen with TrueType fonts.

Another possibility is that the user has removed (or 'lost') the standard font and that font substitution is happening (Windows will do that without telling you anything).

They may say they didn't change anything, but if they're anything like most users I've encountered they really mean "I didn't change anything THAT I THINK IS RELATED TO THIS PROBLEM". Two users in one place, and suddenly too. Bets are that one discovered something, showed it to the other, and now you're cooked.
