It can be overwritten at the time of input, but after exiting the box (or pressing the decimal key) it reappears. But it does use up one of the digit positions as I observed.

There is a problem with leading zeros and currency: a format of '$L' will not display the currency symbol; and a format of 'L' with a punctuated mask (e.g. 99,999.99) will not show the comma separator.
