I actually have it running now.
Start Lotus, go to Help and search for MAPI. There is a lot of configuration info there. There is a document indicating how to configure Lotus to work with Word and other microsoft software. I handled the document to the Lotus gurus and a couple of hours later the MAPI controls started to work from VFP.

Seems to me that if you can get the "Send to" menu in Word to send mail through lotus, it will work with the mapi controls.
