What you are describing is an internal rate of return calculation, or IRR. There is no straight forward formula to compute IRR, you have to use an iterative approach.

However, rather than trying to code the entire solution, you can create an Excel object and use either the IRR, MIRR or XIRR functions to solve for the internal rate of return.
