I had to create empty file names to get rid of them. I then validated the DBC and all is now working. But where and how did the temp dbf's get created.

If you create a temp table and don't specify free clause (in CREATE TABLE) command, you'll end up with temp files in your DBC. We had this few times. Could it be a reason?
