There is a utility in the files section here (by Eric Moreau) that retrieves passwords from Access 97 databases. Don't know if it works with .mdw's but you might want to give it a try.

On your other question, depending on your account setup the text from the previous message is automatically added and marked with ">". It's a user preference.
