I remember fighting with this type of problem awhile ago - combo box in a grid not behaving. I ended up having to use the description as the bound source and in the Valid of the combo box replacing the ID using the row source view. This was a nasty one that took me quite a few hours but I can remember getting the solution from UT posts (of course).

The option that is currently there is in the list and the combo box is bound.
