You can actually connect multiple computers to MSDE in a small network. Performance does degrade with the addition of so many computers. I do not know how many. Supposedly 5 or more. Those are the only differences. Sitting in on a Jim Duffy DevCon session last year, his repeated theme was MSDE is SQL Server.
