That's a big question. I'm sure that there are lots of things. Since the UT is heavy with database gurus, I just ran across an idea that I plan to check out. There is a Perl module out there that will allow you to use Perl to read and write to xBase & Fox tables. It can be found at
ftp://archive.progeny.com/CPAN/authors/Jan_Pazdziora/. That sounds like a great thing if you need to do some low level data parsing in an existing application or open/read/write to dbf files in the Unix world. You can even use SQL statements to retrieve data.
Anyway, it's an idea.
