I do not know if this bug in the bugs list at the MS site. I did reported this but for Edit Box to MS site, but I do not know if it is listed in the known bugs list for VFP.

I looked to the code you have posted at the msnews.microsoft.com and can say that this can have many workarounds. One of them is to use the custom independed combobox put over the gird on place exactly where is active cell. I can help you to position it correctly. I did the same for edit box. This way you will be able to get it to work, as well as have usual combobox in the grid.

Another solution is to use the text box and arrow button insde of the container inside of the grid colum, or just a combobox in the container inside of the grid. I guess insode of container it will work correctly, but I did not ever tried that. This, however, requires additional refreshing of container for each grid row refreshing (function call from the Dynamic* property expression).
