If you want to revert, beware about other users in teh network that can already modify it or get the next value after value you going to cancel. You can only lock a record for duration of the editing of the new record by the user, but otehr users than will wait for that user. Is that good idea?
We never worried about this. There will be a gap too in ID values, but not so often. As well as you have a good explanation of it. Usually, customers do not aware about it, but I had one that concerned about it and suggested it as a bug. After a brief explanation he left this as is.
