1. OUTLOOK EMAIL SECURITY UPDATE - THE OTHER SHOE DROPS Last month in Woody's Office for Mere Mortals #2.07 (http://www.woodyswatch.com/wowmm/archtemplate.asp?v2-n07 ), I explained how the "Email Security Update" in Outlook 2000 Service Pack 2 and Outlook 2002 has two controversial parts. One part deals with how Outlook handles files attached to email messages; the other deals with how Outlook interacts with other programs. In that issue, I told you about file attachment blocking in Outlook's Email Security Update, and its implications for both Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2002. Basically, the Email Security Update takes it upon itself to keep you from getting at certain files that are sent to you attached to email messages. There are nuances and tricks - the most significant of which is Ken Slovak's very cool Attachment Options utility, which is available on Sue Mosher's masterful Outlook Web site, Slipstick, at http://www.slipstick.com/files/attopt.zip . Alas, the Attachment Options utility only works on Office XP. It doesn't do a thing to Outlook 2000 SP-2. In this issue I'm going to talk about how the Email Security Update blocks access to your address book. It's the other half of the draconian security overhaul foisted on us Office victims in Office 2000 SP-2, and carried over - lock, stock and groaning barrel - to Office XP. If you're using Outlook 97, 98, the original Office 2000, or 2000 Service Release 1 or 1a, and have no intention of upgrading, you don't need to worry about any of this. (At least, you don't need to worry unless you manually apply the Email Security Update to Office 2000. I sure hope nobody has talked you into doing that. You need the Email Security Update as much as you need another hole in your head.) If you're thinking of installing Office XP (due to be available on May 31) or Office 2000 Service Pack 2 - or if your company might be converting your current Office 2000 setup to Service Pack 2 - you need to understand this stuff. Otherwise, you're in for some rude awakenings.
