Microsoft says: "An object that is exposed to other applications or programming tools through Automation interfaces."

Eric says: "It is a component. It is code that is compiled in a specific way (the COM specifications) that allows other applications or components to reuse it. For example, the Control that are in the Toolbox are ActiveX. Also, components that you add to your references (ie: ADO) are also ActiveX."
