It's not just users, I've also had developers work for me like that too.

Trying to demonstrate reproducing a problem one day, I guided one particular person through the sequence three times before I started beating my head against the wall - every time I got to the point where I said "Now press any numeric key" or "Press a number key from 0 to 9", he always chose the letter A, I did end up grabbing hold of his hand & making sure he pressed a number.

To my original point though, unless its a long complicated procedure, I aim to get the instructions on a single sheet which can be placed by the computer & referred to without the need for turning over.

I will admit to be as bad as any user when it comes to long-winded documentation - I either briefly scan the last few pages or I get to a point where I think I can do it without reading any more.
