MS needed something to compete against Oracle. SQL Server wasn't making lots of sales at the enterprise level where Oracle played. So, they reegineered SQL Server. They looked at the weak points of SQL Server and figured out how to overcome them. They did the same thing years ago when VC++ was introduced to compete agains C++ Builder from Borland.
