I am beginning to think these default function keys are meant to be terminal to host only, not to drive the terminal.

Yes. I only see the problem trying to use the function keys. I can sit here and make the terminal dance with the exception of those keys. I can reprogram those keys to macros and do darn near anything I want, just not the defaults.
