Expanding the threads? What do you mean? The little box to the left of the thread with a plus or minus sign [i.e., the treeview feature]?

FWIW, the critical area for the browser at this site is the threads at the top and the messages at the bottom. Now that areas has been maximized. The only buttons I care about 95% of the time are the new messages, replies, agent and private messages. I also love the 2 combos.
