In the "Data Transformations" dialog, go to the "Advanced" tab and UNcheck the "Enable Identity Insert" box. Having it checked (the default) allows you to insert previous values, so it expects a value to be passed. Having it unchecked makes it work as you'd expect and populate the column. Also, make sure you have the target column set up properly as an identity column.
