I like that idea too and I think it is worth pressing a bit to have it done...
1) It really would be no different than the "New Messages..." "Replies..." etc in form;
2) As with the "New Messages...", the number beside could be a link and the tooltip could explain it. [I wonder why only "New Messages..." number appears as a link? None of the others to the right of it do. Seems like they should].
3) This would give even more help to users who are not 1024.
