There are a number of issues that could cause this error and even sometimes it's a misinterpreted lots of memory (ie: More than 512Mb RAM with VFP3.0)
Since your client is getting this lately first I would suspect a virus. ie: Keypress virus was causing this error in a standalone exe. Next be sure your *.es* files are not corrupted (if not standalone).
Access rights and network speed are also causes but I don't think so in this case.
