After doing some preliminary testing, I decided *not* to use general fields for my images. Rather, I keep the images as separate JPG-files.
The difference is size. Whereas a single JPG-file used ca. 50 KB, after adding it to the sample table as a general field, the filesize grew by over 1 MB. The ratio is at least 1:20.
I recommend, then, to keep the JPG-files as such, and to have only a filename in a field.
