My brother-in-law worked on contract at a very high rate. Then another company got the contract. His choice was, work with company #2, doing the same job, at a lower rate, or stick with company #1 and be sent somewhere else (far away.)

If he didn't choose to keep his job, through #2, they would have just gone out and found a different "warm body" even though he was especially skilled.

He chose to keep the job for the lowered salary (never expected the original salary to last anyways) because he liked what he was doing and liked the people he actually worked with on a daily basis.

Other than the specifices of the contract with Maxim (like health insurance) you need to consider that Maxim may not always have the contract to provide staff to the parent company. Be sure you like the parent company and the people you would work directly with.

Note that it's to Maxim's advantage to pay you as LITTLE as possible and still fill the position. They are paid to "fill the spot" not to keep you, so there is none of the stuff companies do to retain good staff. If the spot dries up, they just lay you off.

What other good opportunity might come along in the next 12 months if you pass on this and your current job bites the dust?

>I have an opportunity to move out of my full-time position into a 12 month contract with Maxim Group. I'm not sure if I want to do that yet, because I've never worked on contract before. I would like some input on a couple of things:

>Does anyone have experience with Maxim Group? The person I spoke with seemed to be very straightforward and honest, letting me know upfront what is guaranteed and what is not. I didn't sense any deception, but then again I'm not a Jedi master. <g>

>What is a fair rate for working with a recruiter like Maxim? The job is W-2 and guaranteed for 12 months. I explained that I've heard rates online from $45/hr to $90/hr and up. She agreed that those were acceptable rates for an Independent Contractor, but that this was different since I was W-2, they find the job opportunity for me, and assume some of the risk. That seems to make sense, but I want to make sure I'm not getting swindled.

>For the most part, I'm a low risk person, so I'm not sure what I want to do. We did work out a rate that seemed to cover the extra risk and lower benefits I would receive, while still providing a decent income increase. Also, my current company's financial situation is still shaky. What do you think?
