Kenneth,
Assuming w2k (can't remember if was same in w98) :
-Launch windows explorer
-Right click on a HDD and select properties
-Go to Hardware tab you'll see all drives listed
Do this for each HDD in list :
-Properties
-Disk properties tab
-Uncheck 'Write cache enabled'

You can also reach same 'Disk properties tab' from :
Control panel\System\Hardware\Device manager\Disk drives (Properties per HDD)

Visual Source Safe (You can click 'Show acronyms' in UT bottom menu)
I think it's only in enterprise version of VStudio and as a separate product. I use it to keep versions of my projects.
If you don't have it zip often. Zipping forces disk buffers to flush even if 'write cache enabled'. I know how it's distracting to see all 00 :( Happened to me too after hrs of work.
BTW did you check temp files ? They might have the code in them.
