Hi JohnK,

To me the term "best practices" is simply a more 'formal' way of describing what has been going on since the beginning of time - if you see a better way to do something, you adopt it.

I guess that the newer term might have the connotation of steps toward ensuring the propogation of each such 'adoption' across a wider audience of a company or industry.

Maybe, too, it's a modern-day euphanism for 'stealing other peoples ideas' < s >.
