How should different data paths be handled in Visual FoxPro 5?

My department has a Marketing Information and Planning application written in FoxPro for Windows 2.6a.
Our tables are located on the network for most of our users. However, our executive staff has laptops
that are removed from the network whenever they want to work out of the office. In this situation, they
copy the necessary tables to their laptop's hard disk before the undock from the network. This application
is also on the computers in our field offices.

In FPW 2.6 we have a data path variable pointing to our data. It can be different for development mode,
networked mode and standalone mode. Since the database path is "hardcoded" into the .DBC in VFP5, how
should the three modes be handled?
