I actually use it automatically when I want a link to open a window because you never know whether it's going to. Some sites do, some sites don't, some do for some links, not others. On my mouse at home, I have the thumb button set to shift. Makes it easy to do with just the mouse. You can also right-click and choose "open in new window", but I find the shift-click easier.

If I remember correctly, the answer Michel gave before is something along the lines of people expect the link to open in the same window when they're not logged in, but don't when they are logged in. Personally, I think all links that go to a different site should open a new window, but that's just me. :)
