I can recall Microsoft had several papers on use of VFP as a middle tier and they also stated it was recommended for that purpose. Even so I had lots of problems trying to convince companies to let me use it. One company I worked for had a project they gave to me and it was in Visual Basic. I used VFP for the data tier to connect to the backend via ADO. It worked great and everyone was happy.

Even when Microsoft has defined the use and position of VFP, companies may not listen. As we know this is no small problem.
